Adolph L. Luetgert was convicted of murdering his wife and sentenced to life in prison. The verdict came after a seven hour trial, with Judge Gary accepting the verdict at 11:15 p.m. The case followed rumors of a unanimous verdict and public interest surged as Luetgert, calm, faced the jury and guards. The defendant had been linked to the 1897 disappearance of Mrs. Louise Luetgert, whose body was reportedly boiled in a soap vat.
In St. Petersburg a college for dentistry exists and another in Vilna with most students being women. Women were admitted as apprentices in Russian apothecaries in the last two years, with the rule that no more than one woman may be employed at each apothecary.
