Wisconsin endures a brutal heat spell with no rain. At least two deaths and dozens hospitalized as high temperatures reach the 90s across the state. Milwaukee reports a heat related fatality and multiple emergency medical cases.
Mosir cloudy and cooler on Saturday. Partly cloudy with a cool temperature range noted. Local hourly temperatures and a reference almanac show May readings and planet details for the skywatching list.
Bayfield county farmers and fruit growers may shoot deer damaging crops after the state conservation commission voted unanimously to grant permits. No count of how many would apply was given, but growers were urged to exercise good judgment in any killings.
Two women sustained non serious injuries in separate crashes. Jeannette Baumgartner of 602 N East Ave was jaywalking on South street near the post office and was struck by a car driven by William Gramann 16 of 827 Greenfield Ave. She was treated at Waukesha Memorial Hospital and released. In a second collision on Highway 24 near Waunakee, Jane P. Bietow of Waterford Wis was hurt when George L. Wallner of Lake Beulah passed her and his bumper caused her car to veer into a ditch. She remains in satisfactory condition at Memorial Hospital.
Earl White found his brand new car stolen and later recovered on Highway 35 about 30 miles south of Superior. Thief took most major parts including motor transmission radiator battery over drive gears heater air conditioner and more. The speedometer remained showing 49 miles though White had driven only 32 miles.
Downtown property owners and Wisconsin Gas and Electric challenge delays on the Main street project. Stack Construction chief cites hollow sidewalks, unfilled subterranean rooms, and blocked curb work as slowing progress between Five Points and Hartwell avenues. Electric poles must be moved after wiring removal to permit street widening and excavation.
About 350 high school seniors toured local plants and college life on Senior Orientation Day in Waukesha. Guides from Kiwanis and Carroll College helped job, college, and community life become clearer, with tours split between business industry and agriculture outlets and campus life.
Four miners trapped 500 feet underground in the Gilberton Coal No 5 colliery were found dead after 50 hours of rescue attempts. They died of carbon monoxide as fumes overwhelmed them while trying to reach the main shaft. Names: William O'Brien, Raymond Eye, John Wolwok, and William Kelley.
An experiment at Waukesha High School with UW educator Dr. John W. Rothney and Nicholas J. Pannella tests guided versus unguided vocational choice. Over five years nine hundred juniors at four schools participate. Rothney notes two of three adults dislike their jobs and attributes it to lack of guidance. He stresses success requires social understanding and job wisdom, not skill alone.
The Veterans Administration said it will issue dismissal notices to 8,000 employees on Monday for budget reasons. The cuts exclude hospitals and medical programs but will close 42 small field offices in 23 states.
About 100 teenagers will enter the first freshman class at Catholic Memorial High School. The building sits on 30 acres in southeast Waukesha, touted as one of the state’s most modern schools with fireproof steel and concrete structure, brick facing, glass brick light wells, and fluorescent-lit tiled halls across three floors.
Carroll College graduate Leo Steffens returns as solo pianist with the Waukesha Symphony for the season finale at the high school auditorium. He performs Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 with Dvorak New World Symphony, Purcell Trumpet Prelude and Overture 1947 by Homer Keller.
A Wisconsin Republican Senate caucus proposed a flat 15 percent rent boost with state rather than federal control, while also backing a local option allowing cities to decide on rents. The plan would end state controls for some properties and speed evictions, with protections and penalties for overcharged rents. The current law expires May 15, and a joint committee will weigh both measures next week.
James Christoph and Ivan Adashek were inducted into honorary societies at the University of Wisconsin. Christoph, son of Floyd H. Christoph, is a junior in letters and science majoring in education and political science and chairs the student forum. Adashek, a February graduate from the School of Business Administration, joined the Iron Cross and is the son of Rebeca Adashek of 373 West Main Street.
