A Soo Line freight derailed 12 cars including a gasoline tanker at the Pure Oil bulk plant near West Avenue in Waukesha. Official damage estimated between 50 000 and 100 000 with no injuries. A coal journal caused the wreck dragging 19 cars off the track and damaging several freight cars. Fire crews warned spectators, fuel spilled, and efforts shifted to clearing rail and salvaging cargo.
