La Follette Buried Under Old Oak Tree
Paul I. Mallon reports the burial of Robert M. La Follette in West Hill Cemetery Wisconsin. A quiet ceremony under a whispering oak marked the grave with no pomp or military display. Honorary pallbearers from Congress and state offices attended, as Belle La Follette and children watched beside a five foot high wall of flowers. The casket was lowered quickly and a simple prayer offered by Dr. Haydon. The oak tree remains the family’s lone monument for now.
