He placed a classified ad in a Miami newspaper offering his seven children aged eight years to nine months to seven Florida families. The Oconomowoc National Guard invites 17 to 25 year olds to join Company G tomorrow night from 7 to 10 at the Persry Friz real estate offices 265 W Broadway Waukesha. Lt Vern Peters says the 48 hour draft delay delays action but peacetime quota targets 341000 men with 250000 already in ranks. Sgt Walter Carlson notes the delay hasn’t spurred enlistments as the army readies 12 month service for volunteers once the bill passes. Recruiting drives are to be held at the Oconomowoc armory and in Waukesha with aim to train and possibly base hours locally if numbers permit. Company G’s World War I service included France and World War II battles in the Philippines and New Guinea. The unit now has 94 enlisted men and five officers and continues to stress home-based service choices before draft law.
