Coroner Alvin H Johnson called it accidental while noting witnesses saw bubbles and the men had been drinking. The body was recovered by bystanders and taken to the county morgue. one man was questioned and later released.

Four Des Moines men were killed when their plane crashed in a fenced Kansas wheat field during an electrical storm four miles south of St Marys along Heisler Island on a 700 acre tract.
