Former Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles remained seriously ill but showed improvement after lying unconscious for hours beside a frozen Maryland brook. Doctors reported no signs of foul play and noted heart activity stabilizing, with Welles conscious and resting. family and associates described his fragile condition amid a sequence of earlier heart incidents and recent stress.
Six U S soldiers from the 2nd constabulary squadron at Horsfeld were arrested by Soviet border guards near Helmbolduhousen. German police and U.S. officers negotiated for their return as shots were fired but no one hit. The men and a German policeman were taken toward the Soviet border, with no word from them since.
Archie Price 76 a founder mail carrier for Waukesha died Christmas Day at Waukesha Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. He helped cover the city when free small delivery began in 1802 and was part of a 1802 quartet with William Swirt Fred Kuenzler and Sol Youmans. He later owned a store in Montana and worked in Chicago before returning to Waukesha as a desk clerk. Services Tuesday at 2 pm at Randle Funeral Home with interment at Prairie Home Cemetery.
Investigators urged the army to reverse its handling of Ilse Koch known as the Bella of Buchenwald saying a lighter sentence would be unjust while German authorities pursue punishment for her alleged atrocities at the Nazi camp. The emergency court of appeals upheld Rent Director Tighe E. Woods authority to set minimum standards for rent boards proving general increases. Woods approved 8 percent for Jamestown based on taxes, rejected 12 percent for reduced earnings from a sample of 450 units, with 200 rejected for improper forms. The board argued over sample size. court rejected that challenge.

The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company denied a report that Gov. Thomas E. Dewey would become its president in 1940. In notices to 38,000 employees, president Leroy Lincoln stated there is absolutely nothing to the rumor.

A mother father and their six year old son were injured in an automobile collision on Bluemount Road in Brookfield. The Wattawa family from Wauwatosa, Mr and Mrs Ellsworth J Wattawa and their son Chania, were hospitalized with injuries and listed in serious condition.
Two seamen rode out a night on the drifting stern of an Argentina tanker and were rescued by the Coast Guard. Earlier 16 crew members, including four American Navy araman, were picked up. A five man surf boat crew from the cutter Agassiz carried out the two men near Cape Hatteras after a long airborne search, with no victims reported.
Russ Barry a 30 year old accountant and former Sabre athlete died when his car stalled on the Broadway crossing as a train approached at about 20 miles per hour. Witness James Lavine reported Barry’s car stopped mid tracks and was struck by the engine. Barry had served in the Pacific, worked as a certified public accountant, and played basketball for the American Legion. He was survived by his widow June and his parents. Funeral arrangements were announced with services at St Mary’s Church in Junenu.
President Truman charged that Russia violated specific agreements made at Potsdam and Yalta, saying contracts are not binding on the Soviet government. He asserted the Soviet Union bent none of the key understandings and stressed the breach in postwar diplomacy.
