The House completed action on the mild Republican anti inflation bill and sent it to President Truman for his signature. Final passage stood 281 to 73 with Truman expected to sign, though the bill falls short of the stronger powers he sought during the emergency session.
Senate President Vandenberg announced the State Department will end all shipments of dismantled German plants to Russia. He said no further eastward shipments would be allowed and any shipments must go west. The measure, passed by the Senate, allows voluntary industry agreements to allocate scarce goods and exempts such agreements from anti-trust prosecution with administration seeking broader controls.
The Maxwell Electric Products receiver sold the assets at 304 N Grand Ave to Manufacturing Sales Corp of Milwaukee for 2050. Judge Gehl authorized the transfer in chessit court. The firm had listed debts near 59000 and assets around 700 with no equipment.
Mostly cloudy forecast for Wisconsin with very light snow in southern areas tonight and Saturday. Little temperature change expected with a low around 28 this morning and a high yesterday of 26. Local thermometer readings show varied temperatures with mild fluctuations and a general cool pattern continuing into the next day.
Oneida county authorities postpone questioning Buford Sennett, 22, who confessed kidnapping Georgia Jean Weckler, as they await resolution of the Weckler case. A separate search resumes for the unidentified woman found near a cranberry marsh, while divers plan another dive on the Wisconsin River near Blue River to locate the girl’s body.
In Havana the high profile murder trial of Patricia Schmidt ends with a verdict of homicide and possible 6 to 26 year range. The ex dancer known as Latira faced charges for killing John Lester Mee aboard the yacht Saura. She thanked the court after the verdict and asserted self defense amid defense claims of cruel treatment by Mee.
President Truman asked Congress to authorize a 17 billion dollar recovery program for 16 non communist European nations to counter Soviet totalitarian aggression and protect US security. He backed a 6.3 billion initial appropriation, warned against slashing the plan, and proposed a new Economic Cooperation Administration to oversee recovery efforts starting April 1 1948.
A Beloit area tile worker William Hall 50 died in a Beloit hospital after illness lasting over two months. Doctors initially attributed death to pneumonia though autopsy revealed two old bullet wounds in chest and back. Pathologist said a small caliber bullet likely passed through the chest, with wounds fully healed. Police see no foul play but investigations continue with cooperation sought from Illinois authorities. Hall lived with his son near the Wisconsin Illinois line. he had been divorced and had a sister hosting him in Beloit.
Emerson Quiro of St. Paul Ave plans a $32,000 centralized distributing facility for petroleum products at 224 W St. Paul Ave. The project includes converting Estberg home to offices and two apartments, building a 40x80 steel warehouse, a 40x32 frame showroom, and a 40x851 steel garage. Plans prepared by Jemerson were approved by the state industrial commission to group operations for efficiency. A separate note reports Sugar heir John D. Spreckels cleared of beating charges after a Pasadena jury found him not guilty following testimony from six witnesses.
A misty start today precedes snow chances in southern areas tonight and Saturday. Mild conditions continue through the weekend with mostly cloudy skies and light flurries, especially in the west. Overnight lows range near 25 to 28 degrees, highs near 30 to 38 degrees.
Whitelaw Prestey 33 of 477 W Main St faced Judge Scott Lowry for the fourth time in a week on drunkenness charges. Bail set at 50. He confessed he was broke and would stay jailed until his lawyer tomorrow. Floyd Patton 27 of Waukesha fined 25 for driving without a license after a pole strike while returning from Milwaukee job to support his wife and four children. his license had been revoked earlier after a bond issue following a crash near Mazamania. Dist Atty Homer J Williams cited negligence in the incident.
Washington to White House the House passed and sent to the White House a Senate resolution ordering Secretary of Agriculture Cline ton P. Anderson to hand over to Congress and the public his list of big commodity speculators. Anderson said it would not take long to prepare the lists. The measure was approved by voice vote amid concerns about private businessmen.
About 60 members of the Future Homemakers of America at Waukesha High School hosted a party for 125 children aged 2 to 6 at the Waukesha County Children's Home. Santa Claus, played by Harold Holl, handed out gifts and popcorn donated by E. E. Buehl. Cookies were shared as girls and about a dozen parents traveled to Milwaukee for the event. The home superintendent called it one of the best activities for the children and praised the girls for showing Christmas spirit.
Waukesha industries and firms announce Christmas plans with gifts, parties, and bonuses. About 600 children will receive candy and toys at the Sales pavilion. 90 salespeople and staff expected at Sealus Christmas dinner in the Schroa Ger Empire Room. Dale Chevrolet and National Motor hold parties. Waukesha Foundry and other shops plan events. Bonus funds include the $8,250 annual retirement fund. projected fund growth beyond $500,000 by next Christmas. Bonuses equal to one month’s salary, up to two for older workers, plus canned goods and gift baskets. Additional firms will announce plans later.
A Waukesha contractor, John Krussell of 428 Wa bash ave, reported 40 or 45 dynamite caps stolen from his car. Police Chief Harold Owens warned of the danger and urged parents to warn children and report the box if found. Also, 13 year old Howard Larsen suffered a severe cut on a leg while sliding down a snow covered hill near Pewaukee route 1 and was treated at Waukesha Memorial hospital.
A federal grand jury indicted retired Maj. Gen. Bennett E. Meyers on six counts of perjury and subornation of perjury in wartime procurement dealings with Aviation Electric. Blener H. LaMarre faced a three count perjury indictment for testimony about Meyers profits from a Vandal ia subcontractor. If convicted on all counts Meyers faces up to 60 years in prison. The case follows Senate War Investigating Committee hearings. Also, Harold Christoffel’s perjury trial was postponed to Feb 16.
A Buffalo newspaper received a child written letter to Santa signed with a simple wish for a limpberker sandwich and a bottle of beer, dated in a playful scrawl. The note shows a child’s playful holiday request addressed to Santa.
Waukesha residents organize to oppose selling Silurian Park as council and park board weigh disposal. Alderman Werner and Howard Wewman push for study delays while the park’s historic spring, once famed as Bethesda’s health draw, now waters a dwindling trickle.
Alfeo Testolin of the Peak Inn and about seven other proprietors plan to stay open on Christmas despite a majority vote by 16 of 23 attending tavernkeepers to close. The meeting at Midway Gardens showed mixed views with many owners voting by proxy and unclear totals for those remaining open.
Bernard Schultz reports a thief took a 260 pound eight point buck that hung from a tree at Schultz northland nursery. The deer was intended for company advertising and had been injected with formaldehyde.
