US cracks huge world dope ring
Federal authorities said 70 more arrests would follow to shut down a $5 million a year cocaine trafficking ring. Eduardo Balarezo, a 48-year-old ship’s steward, was seized on the Guardia about to sail to Italy for allegedly shipping 110 pounds of cocaine monthly with seamen and longshoremen, aided by Charles Lucky Luciano. Balarezo held at $100,000 bail. an associate, Luis Villagas, was jailed on $25,000 bail. The case ties to Peruvian revolution figures and UN action, with Peruvian authorities reporting arrests of about 89 people linked to the ring.

Midwest Dope Peddler Arrested in Kalamazoo Brothel
James M. Humphries, 35, described as a major Midwest narcotics peddler, was arrested August 13 at a Kalamazoo brothel he allegedly operated. Canadian ex convict used prostitutes to move heroin cocaine and marijuana between New York Detroit Chicago and Kalamazoo. About 15000 dollars worth of drugs were found in the establishment including heroin hidden in a woman's shoe. Humphries had been released from Kingston Ontario prison in 1946 after four years for narcotics violations and he reportedly controlled a Robbins, Illinois nightclub outside Chicago.
