Office Girl Bets Across Channel Sets New Distance Mark

Shirley Chadwick, a 31 year old San Diego stenographer, swam the English Channel from Cap Gris Nez to Dover in 38 hours and 28 minutes, beating the previous women's record by more than an hour and becoming the fastest swimmer to cross the channel in modern history. Shirley May France of Somerset, Mass., was dragged from the water five miles from the English shore after 13 hours 28 minutes, failing to become the youngest to swim the channel. Chadwick trained in a wartime pool in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and swam supported by her father, RAW Chadwick, aboard a motor boat. The historic crossing drew large crowds as she completed the final push to shore at Dover.
