The Waukesha area saw a about 30 percent drop in job seekers in the past month, with A Ludwig, state employment manager, noting that some employers may hire women for heavy industry if hiring widens. He says July visits fell 29 percent from June, while placements rose due to late June and early July activity.
Clifford Stearns, 22, of 212 N Charles Ave, quit the West Allis fire department after a year and a half. He resigned Aug 1, effective Saturday at 7 am, saying he could not support his family on the pay of 49 a month for a second year man. He started a new job today at a West Allis steel company. Fire Chief Emery Downie confirmed the resignation.
A 16 year old Waukesha youth, Walter Li Miller Jr, was arrested after a high speed police chase through Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. He led officers from 80 to 5 mph, ran red lights, damaged property, and crashed a car after which he was captured near Goerke’s Corners. Miller, injured, was hospitalized. Clayton William Jackson of Waukesha was held as a passenger and uninjured.
Alice Oatway longtime Waukesha civic teacher died in Chicago at her daughter’s home where she had lived since April. Widow of Dr. W. H. Oatway, she was active in recreation boards parks and play grounds and a nurse supporter. Funeral Thursday 2 am First Presbyterian Church with interment at Fairdale Home cemetery. Friends may call after 3 pm Wednesday at 4d S East.
William Burtch of Chicago, 36, walked into a Boston police station with a .38 revolver and confessed to killing Eugene Black, 35, at the apartment of Burtch's estranged wife Alma. Black lay dead from five bullet wounds. Burtch claimed he came to settle the matter.
A year old Milwaukee man and his 15 year old daughter were injured Saturday afternoon when their motorcycle sidecar ed a car on Delafield avenue and was dragged several car lengths. George Gross and his daughter Ivarly were treated at Waukesha Memorial hospital for cuts and bruises. Gross also suffered an ankle injury. They were riding north in the 300 block on Delafield when the motorcycle passed a car driven by Lorena Schmear of Watertown. Both were thrown from the motorcycle.
Donors are urged to give blood tomorrow at the Milwaukee Blood Center, with a mobile unit to operate 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers from General Malleable Sorp, Protuts', the city fire department, and the Knights of Columbus will donate. A doctor and registered nurses will oversee the drive, offering a physical to volunteers and refreshments after their donation.
The Waukesha Service Club will run a mobile blood unit offering canteen services including coffee fruit juices sandwiches and cookies for donors. Dr T J Greenwalt describes transfusion insurance as a community plan giving blood supplies to all residents at no cost for the blood itself. Volunteers who have not been notified to give tomorrow will be contacted later as the unit returns to WakheShe on September 18.
Dispatches from Robert Bounsheff report North Korean forces infiltrating along the Naktong River and breaking through positions near Pungong Ni. U.S. reinforcement moves to meet the attack as Eighth Army records heavy resistance and artillery exchanges.
Washington bulletin reports a mobilization of 89 009 white volunteers and men, with funds designated for callups on August 11 and October 41. The order covers ground and sea personnel in the volunteer reserve, including members of organized units.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission rejected a 38,170,000 request for local rate increases, keeping Waukesha residents at $2.80 for one party home service and $4.75 for business, while granting a about 2,006,000 boost in intrastate toll rates. The commission says long distance should bear the larger share and set a new intrastate toll rate schedule by Sept. 30. City Attorney Hippenmeyer called the decision satisfactory and noted potential appeals only if local rates had risen.
Coroner Alvin Johnson investigates a drowning on Lac La Belle involving Madison man George McCarthy 25 and Clarence Yanna 24 with his wife, plus another couple, after their overturned boat was struck by a large speedboat at about 4 30 p m Saturday. Two others survived clinging to the hull aided by a Milwaukee couple. the driver of the speedboat not yet identified and a sheriff's report notes a rented boat near Beggs. The victims had been fishing with the Chatfields in Oceanamowac and many could swim, though Chatfield could not. The coroner plans to question Frank Chatfield and consult with District Attorney Dancey on possible action against the speedboat driver.
A B 28 Superfortress crashed near a crowded trailer village in California killing 19. Its 119 100 pound bombs exploded ten minutes later, harming residents and injuring many as firefighters battled fires and blasts. The base commander and other officers assisted victims while witnesses described the chaotic scene and failed propeller and landing gear reports.
