McDowell charges U S shipped bomb material to Russia in 1948
Washington report states House Un American Activities subcommittee chairman John McDowell charged that the United States secretly shipped uranium and heavy water and other bomb materials to the Soviet Union in 1948 after intense pressure from Soviet agents. He said shipments were flown from a U S airfield and tied to wartime and postwar intelligence pressures. The testimony linked Communist infiltration to government agencies and criticized wartime secrecy practices. He claimed the materials were the essence of atomic weaponry and warned of ongoing espionage risks cited by multiple witnesses.
