Sept 14 Dubuque reports Rev Father Carey urges parents to keep children off streets at night and away from questionable venues. He cites the widow of Naim and warns that spiritual deaths of youths are more tragic than physical ones.
New York city scene as mourners, hundreds of men and boys, gather on Wall Street to eulogize a chief killed recently. The event unfolds with a solemn street ceremony as crowds pay tribute to the fallen leader.
On Sept 13 New Hartford showcases southern produce with fruits vegetables grass cotton and soil samples from Mississippi Louisiana Alabama and Texas aboard a siding car Captain Merry of the ICRR lectures on southern farming. A severe storm struck the M B parsonage causing major damage and shocks to residents while a new croquet club forms inviting members with a simple join procedure.
John W Castles, president of Union Trust Co. at 80 Broadway, died by cutting his throat at the Grand Union hotel yesterday afternoon. Ill for months from nervous prostration due to overwork, he had led Union Trust since December 1908 after leaving Guaranty Trust Co. The panic era weighed on him as he faced a heavy workload.
In Chicago on September 12 the craft trial of Police Inspector McCann featured Lermont O Malley describing an alleged interview with McCann Heitler and Shantz. O Malley said Shantz told McCann he paid forty dollars monthly for police protection for three months and did not understand why his saloon was squeezed out. McCann allegedly ordered O Malley to remove the women from the saloon, but they returned soon after Heitler and Shantz are both indicted in graft cases.
Vice President James S. Sherman, in Kansas City on business, will tonight attend a Missouri Republican club reception. One thousand invitations have been issued with many prominent Republicans from Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma expected to attend.
News of two killings reaches Bellamy lumber camp after two negro intruders enter the home of William Gray and shoot his wife, Mrs. Gray. Gray kills one assailant in a struggle but is fatally wounded himself. The other intruder is captured and shot by a posse.
New York September 1d. Tudge Lovett elected chairman of the executive committee of the Southern Pacific today. Jacob H Schiff and William Rockefeller were re elected directors and also members of the executive committee.
New York reports on Dr Frederick Cook letters to his wife claiming undisputed evidence of discovering the north pole. Affidavits by Rudolph Francke and Joseph White describe Peary seizing Cook letters and supplies aboard the Roosevelt, including a trunk of furs and gear, prompting threats of legal action.
Experiments are planned to install direct aerographic service from South Africa to England using 1000 foot high kites to capture Hertzian waves. Initial rate 24 cents a word, with government subsidy likely to lower to 2 cents per word eventually. Durban, Natal reported. Weather and real estate transfers follow in Des Moines and Waterloo listings.
Springfield notes the national Yeomen of America convention elects T. M. Burns of Fairbury as chairman to organize proceedings. In Philadelphia, Penn wins the intercollegiate tennis doubles championship today by defeating Harvard in the final round of three.
Washington Sept 14 Supervisors appointed for the coming census must resign from political committees and refrain from political activity during their term. Census Director Durand operates under Presidential instruction to enforce a strict neutrality rule. He asks supervisors to declare any political office or committee membership and willingness to resign if needed, noting potential conflicts with state office provisions.
Pittsburg, Sept. 14 The strike of filationers and cutters in the American window glass works at Jeannette and Monongahela is taking serious aspects. Attempts to import workmen have caused clashes. The men want a twenty percent increase in wages while the company refuses more than eight.
Death entered the home of Richard Folsom at 112 Bates street at noon today summoning George Servoss, aged father of Mrs. Folsom, who had lived with his daughter for over a year. The 88 year old, formerly from near Oelwein, had suffered long with cancer. His wife preceded him in death years ago and beside the daughter one is left to mourn. Funeral from the home tomorrow at 2 pm with burial in Salt View Cemetery.
Seventy two individuals were confined in the county jail in the quarter ending Sept 1. Jail upkeep cost 564.10 while the sheriff's total bill reached 917.90 including notices and transport to penitentiary and institutions. Many offenders were habitual drunks, plus several women charged with disorderly conduct. Proposals suggested to employ prisoners on the streets for profit.
Barclay township notes report the Sherman Brothers lost a valuable horse named Tlockjaw last week. Anna Zilick of Waterloo visited her sister. A fair at Independence drew attendees and Frank Houser won first prize for sugar beets. Rain is needed for plowing. A group including W. P. Walker, Silas Sherman, and W. N. Oliver spent Sept 4 week in Minneapolis at the state fair and other attractions, returning tired but pleased. Grandma Walker and Mrs. H. Oliver left for Nebraska for a short visit. A goodly number will attend the La Porte City fair this week. Mrs. G. J. Baldwin departed abroad for an extended visit. Ned Oliver had a slight blood poisoning issue last week.
New York today reports Oscar Leisner shot himself after promising to join his wife at her coffin. He spoke of not being able to live without her. Funeral attendees recalled his plea to the deceased and his concern for their son Oscar who was briefly missing before a successful recovery.
Alan Whitten, boatswain of the Erik in 1905 and 1908, testifies about the polar controversy. He says Peary's crew removed Cook's provisions from Etah and even sent boats to Annatok to seize stores. Whitten notes ivory and skins from both Cook and Francke vanished and says Peary lacked enough supplies to stay longer than about fifteen months.
Berlin reports Count von Bernstorff, German ambassador to the United States, explained the general effect of the new American tariff on Germany to representatives of all government departments. This marked the first in a series of conferences on the topic.
Des Moines reports Hon. Isaac Brandt known as Uncle Isaac has died at 82 after an apoplexy while he slept. A longtime Des Moines figure, he served in the legislature and as state representative, postmaster, and park commissioner. He was a renowned authority on early Iowa history and active in many societies.
Senator La Follette pushes Taft on timber policy amid Ballinger Pinchot controversy. Story cites Indian reserve forest management, alleged extravagance, and interior department defense. Also reports a desert search in Greenwater Death Valley Junction for Eldridge who disappeared Aug 24.
San Bernardino Cal Supt 14 Lost. A desert escape ends in tragedy as authorities report a fatal incident involving a missing person and ongoing search efforts. Local officials provided limited details while continuing the inquiry.
Dubuque September 14 Special A campaign against auto speeding and reckless driving led the city council to approve an ordinance limiting speed to six miles per hour on some streets and four miles per hour on others. A fine of 25 dollars for the first offense and 50 dollars for subsequent offenses is set. Police will enforce the rule with drivers urged to take curves cautiously and give warning. Cars must have reliable brakes and operate with headlights at night.
Fort Scott Ark Sept 14 Involuntary bankruptcy proceedings led today by bondholders of the Chatnute Cement and Clay Product Company. The plant operates with branches at Bronson Michigan and Akron Ohio. Assets placed at about a quarter million dollars liabilities at about two million.
Jacob Nazowisky died at Homeopathic hospital after a fall while a box of lemons slid from a wagon near Union Station. Harry Zeon was injured but escaped the wheels. Nazowisky's act to save the freight led to fatal chest injuries. The lemons remained undamaged.
