Neighborhood notes from Janesville recount the October marriage of Hugh Ballantyne to Mrs Florence Schuyler Jones in Bejoit with guests and church services. other items include births, charitable drives for monuments, a wild west show at the opera house, and various local visits, visitors, and church appointments.
Fairbank residents record a busy week with visits from Ada Cox of Oelwein and Rath Southworth of Minneota, Miss Nichols in Waterloo, and Rev. Cochran returning from Tipton. Local gatherings include a Tourist Club luncheon with autumn decor, an art gallery exhibit, and neighbors hosting guests in Waterloo and Independence.
The Grundy Center area reports a strong potato business with an estimated fifty cars expected to ship this week benefiting growers and traders in the district.

Mrs Tor Hall has been ill with rheumatism the past week. Miss Mabel Magee clerking in N J Gerhard store during closing out sale. Mr and Mrs Henry Fisher returned to Bensett Thursday. Darrell Bilis returning to Nora Springs to open a studio. Father Sheehy recovering from illness. Miss Plooma Pringle returned from Ackley. Mrs John Heery of Clarksville visiting. Dr W E Patterson bought the Dave Carhey residence. Miss Carrie Youtz hosted a miscellanous shower for Miss Rosa Hartz. Prospective bride received china and linen gifts. Mrs Wim H Rupert died October 3 at 65 years, 1 month, 2 days. Funeral in M E church, interment at Rose Hill.
Porte City October 11 Mr and Mrs Simpson hosted thirty guests at a souvenir postal dinner at their Chestnut Street home Thursday evening October 10. Guests included Mrs BE Flemming of Ft Bryan Texas sister of Mr Sampson and Mrs A E Kline with daughter Besain who returned Thursday from a cast sightseeing trip.
Edna Ballin returns home from Mc Vernon for a visit. Dr Ed Thompson and Gertrude Newcom wed with Rev A B Bush officiating. Families move into Britt area homes. funeral for Jud Stevenson at Congregational church with Riverside cemetery burial. Visits from Bertha Steckler and others noted as community connections continue in Shell Rock and nearby towns.
Miss Pear Genina spent six weeks in Wisconsin visiting relatives. Iron Griandy hosted her mother from Friday to Monday. Mrs J Kirk returned from California and is staying with her daughter Mrs J C Clance. Mr John Caley learned of the death of his sister Mrs Mary Thomas of Cleveland Ohio. Mrs Thomas was well known locally.
The October term of Tama County District Court opened Monday with Judge Parker presiding. The docket lists twelve criminal cases including five for narcotics selling against Parizek, Rick, Hach, Yarrett, and Bucher, and larceny cases against Cooper and Minders, plus horse stealing, highway obstruction, prostitution, and other charges. Four divorces are filed and fifty six probate cases remain for disposal. The grand jury has been active all week. Local notes include Mil White visiting from Traer after twenty years, now secretary of a Mason City elevator company considering a Traer elevator purchase, and John Howard selling eighty hogs with strong weights averaging over twenty dollars per head.
Tama county soldiers reunion headed by J B Dennis aims for a grand 1908 Traer gathering. The letter recalls fond past reunions with Govs Sherman Shaw Wilson and speakers, notes park churches and opera house, and mentions invitations to Taft and Secretary Wilson to attend and boost turnout.
In Waverly TA on October 12 a bustling baby show drew mothers and relatives to Giles Bros 5 and 10 cent store for the harvest jubilee sale. Judges selected fifteen contestants with Petronilla Cavanaugh winning the Young Mother prize and Matthew F Luth awarded for the prettiest baby boy among a small male entry.
In Cedar Falls and surrounding towns the Upper Iowa conference elected lay delegates and ministerial delegates amid a heated contest. Key figures include Rev. C. E. Fleming, W. A. Shanklin, and W. W. Carlton. disputes centered on President W. M. King of Cornell College and President W. A. Shanklin of Upper Lawn University as ballots proceeded. Additional notes cover a $20,000 fire at a Trappist Monastery near Dubuque with two barns and corn stored on site destroyed and no insurance.
Mary McManus aged 107, believed Iowa’s oldest woman, died at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in Dubuque. Married in County Clare, Ireland ninety-one years ago, she had lived in the home for years. Husband died decades earlier. she had never been sick, apart from a brief illness before death.
In Council Bluffs thirty to forty former W C T U members met to settle finances and prevent a new schism, electing Lora Bennett as corresponding secretary Mary Williams as recording secretary and Mrs H I Ola Nikola as general treasurer. In Moorhead editor McElwain was attacked after denouncing the town saloon and calling for license revocation, while local officials debated revoking J B Mellsreath Vance’s license amid rising anti-saloon tensions.
Geiwéin October reports the C G W strike remains unsettled with no clear settlement terms. Shops remain under armed siege as non union workers are brought in from eastern points to sustain operations.
Mrs. C P Jones, wife of bridge builder C P Jones, died September 28 in Minneapolis after a period of illness. The couple, long resident in Waterloo, had four children and were among Waterloo's early settlers. Mr. Jones continued bridge work in Minneapolis for 25 years with his son assisting. The obituary notes her cheerful spirit and many friends. An unrelated business ad for Hall’s Catarrh Cure is included, offering $100 reward for cure failure and highlighting testimonials.
Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern Railway announces a time change effective October 1 for train No. 41 to Denver Junction and intermediate points. Schedules show Waterloo departures from Broadway at 10:00 am and 11:00 am with corresponding Denver and intermediate stops.
Parkersburg Ie Oct 12 Mrs Will Heisler’s mind is clearing after injuries from an assault two weeks ago. Delirium faded with improvement noted by her physicians and family care. Community talks of violence toward her husband have eased, and courts may handle punishment if needed. A separation suit and alimony action proceed as marital tensions are cited. Dr Shoop's Restorative is advertised as stomach and nerve aid with druggist usage.
Mrs. Arthur J. Bandfield died at 2 15 pm at 815 Witton Street Waterloo of cancer after over four years of illness. She was 51, born April 15 1866 near Janesville Iowa. Survived by husband and six children, three died young, plus four brothers and a sister. Funeral tomorrow at Grace M E Church Waterloo, then burial in Janesville. Her mother and father are deceased. She was a member of Grace church, formerly of the Methodist church of Janesville.
