Monticello Times reports B D Haeussler turned two horses into a pasture near the duster factory. A neighboring beekeeper, Hans Kettlitz, kept forty swarms along the east and north fence. A horse knocked over hive, causing a furious swarm that fatally injured the horse. Kettlitz battled the bees alone, saved others, and rebuilt the hives. The loss included money from stolen hive gear as bees attacked in a lengthy afternoon battle.

Geo Teneyck, brother of Mrs. Mel Evans, was sentenced to five years in the Fort Madison penitentiary by Benton County court after pleading guilty to attempting to kill his wife last May. Killed by a Horse in Independence Barn Accident
Independence October 1 Michael Nolan a young man about 30 and son of Win Nolan died after being found in a barn with injuries believed to be from a horse kick during noon chores. Mice Cause Fire in Jesup Hardware Store and Hall
A fire at the B C Walker Hardware Store in Jesup started near the wall, believed to be caused by mice carrying matches.
