Iowa Railroads Earn Big Incomes In Annual Report
RATLWAXN EARNINGS Des Moines November 28 An increase of 7 350 000 in gross earnings at the Iowa railroads surpassing 22 per cent is disclosed by the annual report of the state railroad commission completed yesterday. Gross earnings last year about 55 475 000 rose to more than 56 000 000. Net earnings grew to 2 100 000 while wages by employees rose over 1 000 000 and the number of employees increased nearly 3 000. There are now 42 560 employees earning 26 755 000 in wages last year an average over 2 a day. Total expenses of Iowa railroads statewide were over 46 716 000 with wages up more than 60 per cent of gross. In recent years Iowa gross earnings have risen over 9 per cent from 41 341 000 in 1896 to 65 856 004 this year. Net earnings rose from 13 105 000 to 19 181 000, while employer margins neared 11 000 000, up nearly 7 per cent.
