A Tuesday night blaze at the Wil Silvey farm in Fremont township destroyed a large barn and killed eleven cattle four horses and most farm machinery and crops. The cause remains unknown as chores were done and the family was indoors. The 9 pm fire advanced before discovery, leaving little salvage. Insurance status could not be confirmed.
Heinteck News reports a cruel Halloween prank north of town led to three Ramsey cattle killed on the Great Western tracks by a northbound train around midnight. Ramsey estimates $200 loss and vows to uncover the perpetrators. Also notes on Abrs. C. B. Musser returning from Iowa City after a critical operation and Mrs. J. Gange undergoing appendicitis surgery with a Waterino nurse attending.
Beaver Valley reports most farmers husking corn as Rid Miller sale drew good prices. Hennings and son Alfred visited Gladbrook by auto. Fritz Millar welcomed a son. JF Handley plans to move to J Wood farm. Anton Mortensen of Shell Rock called on Beaver Valley residents. W Stickney from Cedar Falls stayed with daughter Mrs Mullinex. H Sarl sale drew a good turnout with cattle and horses selling well. MorganFarmers called Pleasant Tuesday.
Brandon residents report a lively Halloween with several buildings showing damage from pranks. Jim Hart of Gerrison visited town last week, while Mrs Effie Conn of Colorado and Mrs Mary Kanouse were among local callers and the Stainbrook and Sweeney families hosted guests. Arch Foster of Independence came through on business, and Miss Bertha Gaatch stayed with Miss Martha Sweeney over Sunday.
The Republican notes a prior currency rumor about the Holland bank being short on money, while Cashier Dnties confirms ample currency on hand and growing business. Stevens reports a standout potato yield of about 5,500 bushels from 22 acres, averaging over 250 bushels per acre. Calaway’s butchers slaughtered over fifty hogs and cattle for local farmers. Mr and Mrs Charles Burling hosted a visit from Mrs Burling's mother Mrs John Ray of Alison and Miss Josephine Burling of Postville. all were Waterloo visitors Thursday. Laura Smith of Cedar Falls spent Sunday with her father William Smith. Mrs Harry Leet of Greene assists care for her ill mother Mrs J Gilbert. Dorris attends school here. Miss Lara Meyer returned from Ames after a three week visit. Numerous residents named as visiting, transacting business, or attending funerals in Waverly Waterloo Tripoli Fayette and Ames. Events include weddings and a silver wedding anniversary and a birthday gathering at John Notter’s home.
Bruns hosted a farewell gathering Sunday night as the group prepared to depart this week for Waterloo, where they will establish their new home.
In Janesville on Friday evening Dr D S Bradford hosted a farewell at the St. John home for Mr and Mrs J W St John who depart for Wyoming soon. Nearly ninety guests, gifts including a ring a Bible and birthday book, and a special fête for Leonard St John followed a social gathering with coffee and doughnuts.
Mrs James Graham hosted a five o clock dinner with a gathering of ladies. Miss Mary Murtagh of Philadelphia visits, T Myers visits Illinois. Mrs J E Carter called on Mrs J W Ray in Allison. Dr O P Thompson sold his house to H Yareho and will move in early next year. Miss Sallie Baldwin of Leadville moves to live with Rev Shoemaker and attend high school. Miss Wava Hummer leaves for Cedar Rapids then New York for winter. News arrives of Mrs G L Cotting’s death after a fatal fire in Bristol Wis. once a Shell Rock resident, now of Red Cloud Neb. Amick leaves for San Francisco with family. they tour Western College and Shueyville. Remains of Benj Robbins from Chanute Kan brought for funeral at Baptist church.
Rudolph Shultz from Iowa visited relatives in La Porte while George Hill assists funeral plans for Win Hill of Six Mile Grove. Cattle suffer from black leg as town watches the Dates cast. many attend the trial with mixed opinions on who caused the crime.
In the ordinarily quiet town two hold up rumors surface as James Gannon of Keswick and his brother John McCormack visit from Emmetsburg. Gannon, unwell with rheumatism, travels with McCormack who has long farm ties west of town. McCormack recently recalled driving a stage through La Porte in earlier days. Rose B. Morgan, an elocutionist, will entertain at the Methodist Church next Tuesday night, November 12.
Local items report Miss Mae McVenes sewing in Independence. Miss Daisy Francis stayed with sister Mrs Agnew in Dunkerton. Miss Charlotte Minton of White D., visiting grandparents Mr and Mrs Drayton Hayes. Mrs Crowell and Fay visited Ed Crowell’s family. Mrs W B Dunlap and daughter Beulah visiting Bristow and Dumont. C. C. Meythaler and sister Lettie with Aurora and Hazleton friends. Vera Hayward finishes district No 1 term and is rehired for winter term.
Mrs. Marshall Wheeler of Clarks ville visits Mrs. Miranda Bandfield this week. Mr. Hunter, ill with typhoid fever, is very low. The Linden thimble bee meets Wednesday at Mrs. Hook’s home corner Dearborn and Adrian. All urged to attend for important business. The chapel oyster supper Friday night was successful with receipts just over seventeen dollars to complete the gas lamp fund. Linden orchestra provided music and was well received.
Traer and nearby towns consider cash for goods while those with bank accounts get full access. Farm produce remains tradable if a market exists. Chalk Lambert injures foot on nail but shows no serious effects. Mrs. Kordina’s lamp fire injures bed clothing. $25 insurance paid. Harry Gill buys a carload of horses amid weak horse and money markets. he plans a return after conditions settle. many farmers bring more horses to town.
The Conrad schools closed for two weeks due to a smallpox scare with no spread evident yet. Students were told to remain on their premises during vacation and a special marshal was appointed to enforce attendance.
Deaths at Independence include William Wallace Grooms who died November 6 Kate Lalor who died November 5 and Mrs F Allen who died November 3 according to a local notice.
Oelwein Register reports Joe Cabalka was shot twice Tuesday evening near the Great Western Rock Island crossing during an altercation with a man presumed to be a guard. Cabalka and friends Frank Harper and Frank Jelik helped him home as he described the sequence, the first bullet grazing his calf and the second piercing his left side.
Hampton, November 6. Reports of ongoing hog and livestock thefts plague farmers north and east of town. Floyd Gillett lost nineteen hogs, shoats, and four Poland China brood sows for a total of 79 dollars, while other farmers have seen lanterns circling hog pastures at night and a team aiding quick escapes. Weeks ago a theft of forty to fifty bred chickens was noted. Local residents consider involving the Franklin County Anti Horse Thief Society if the trend continues.
