Waterloo friends report veteran engineer Louis C Foote of Cedar Rapids suffered a paralytic stroke while in a car at Central City on Wednesday. He arrived in Waterloo in 1873 and has been a close friend of engineer D R Gould since early days, with regular visits noted despite moving to Cedar Rapids.
Engineer L C Foote of Cedar Rapids, 64, suffered a paralytic stroke Wednesday evening while operating Illinois Central train No 333 from Manchester to Cedar Rapids. He was taken home in critical condition the same night, after the engine was stopped at Central City and assistance summoned. Foote has served the Illinois Central for 37 years, previously working on Chicago Clinton Dubuque and Minneapolis routes. His career began in Waterloo in 1873, with a long tenure on the Clipper run between Waterloo and Dubuque. Chairman T W Place praised his carefulness and fidelity, calling him an excellent man.

Ottumwa Iowa May 27 Evening Press reports two elderly women were killed waiting for a Burlington freight at a town avenue crossing when a switch engine and cars struck them. Mrs Anna Quinlan 72 died instantly Mrs Kate Dowd 50 died two hours after admission to hospital. Dowd survived by six daughters and a husband Quinlan survived by three sons and three daughters. The fatalities mark another violent death in Ottumwa in three days. Also Charles City reports three youths injured when a horse car collision with an automobile sent Nina Young 20 to May Hospital unconscious with skull fracture and broken collar bone. an operation is underway and prognosis poor.
President Taft sent a letter to Chairman Tawney expressing distress at Democratic criticisms of his traveling expenses. The spat centered on a $25 000 annual allowance and the overdrawn balance from a Western and Southern trip that exhausted White House funds. Democratic objections blocked immediate availability of next year’s travel appropriation.
Michael Healy age 84, father of Attorney Michael Healy and Robert Healy and the late Thomas Healy, a Civil War veteran and the county’s only Mexican, lies in critical condition in Fort Dodge with family at his bedside.
Italian laborer Frank Dromos was found guilty of murder in the second degree after an altercation on December 8. He stabbed W. A. Crompton, a Central Iowa official, who died twenty days later in a hospital.
Des Moines May 27 Evening Press reports George M. Christian and Howard M. Hedrick have bought the Savery hotel from W. Witmer for 50000. Witmer retains ownership of the building. Remodeling costing 50000 will begin immediately. Christian and Hedrick own other hotels in the area.
Brandeis delivered the summing up to the Ballinger committee praising Glavis as an ideal public servant and Pinchot as a man of high character. He cited alleged Ballinger links with Alaska land capitalists, questioned selective investigations of claimants, and suggested coincidences in inquiries and residence effects. He argued Ballinger favored Pacific coast claimants, noted Ballinger allies among Seattle financiers, and asserted Ballinger’s own ties tainted interior department integrity.
New York May 27 Shortly after the sugar trial opened the prosecution rested and Fremer assistant dock superintendent Harry W Walker and two government weighers Jean F Voelker and James Halligan Jr withdrew not guilty pleas and pleaded guilty to all charges. Indictments against three remaining defendants were not dismissed. The trial continues with chief executive Charles R Helke and two subordinates Ernes J W Gerheracht and James P F Bendernagel awaiting trial.
Nashua May 27 Special Mrs Ada mobile Wayne class of 85 Nashua high school will deliver the welcome address to the 1916 class and her son Les Wayne will reply for the class of 10. The annual alumni reception at the opera house follows the graduation program. Neva Johnson and Leona Putney are among classmates with parental ties to earlier classes.
In St Louis May 27 a trial outlines Dora Doxey as the arsenic poisoner of William J. Erder. Dr Friedeberg testified Erder’s final days showed no disease and the State alleges Doxey planned to gain $2700 in life insurance by poisoning him with cacodylate of soda. The court room overflowed as testimony traced Doxey’s movements from St Louis to Des Moines and Columbus with episodes of marriage claims and transfers of policies.
Chicago May 27 The state argued against quashing the indictment of Lee Browne charged with bribing a representative to vote for Senator Lorimer. States Attorney Wayman ridiculed the defense claim bribery is not a crime and warned that labeling a senator as merchandise would imply a stock exchange. He asserted federal jurisdiction does not cover the Browne case and compared it to weights and measures.
Indianapolis May 27 Jesse Overstreet former congressman from 1896 to 1908 has died at 51 He chaired the post offices and post roads committee authored the gold standard law of 1900 served on the national monetary commission and led the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee from 1889 to 1906
Washington May 27 Charges of sensational scope accuse Guggenheim interests of using political influence to place Juneau district attorney and U S marshal as part of a broader effort to shield agents from bribery prosecutions. Alaska delegate Wickersham and former officials testified behind closed doors to support opposition to Rustgard and Faulkner confirmations.
Denison Texas May 27. George McHenry vice president of the First National Bank of Denison and Miss Nellie Evans of Columbus Nebraska will be married at the bride’s home at 6 30 pm today. After the ceremony they will go to Chicago for their honeymoon.
