A city council special session passed to second reading an ordinance granting Stephen B. Howard right of way for a railroad through city streets. The council earlier rescinded a similar grant to Howard, then first read an ordinance for Henry Keane of Dubuque. Officials spent the evening in private conferences and decided to grant rights to both Howard and Keane to settle the matter between them.
In Charles City on Saturday evening a theft of 120 dollars from Mrs. Joe B. Smith’s boarding house kitchen is suspected to have been carried out by a stranger named Blackburns. He was described as Indian, well dressed, seen near the kitchen, and later left on a midnight train for Waterloo. Authorities continue to investigate as community leaders discuss the incident. The paper also notes upcoming local events including a Catholic sermon at the high school graduation and a Mendelssohn Elijah concert at the Hildreth Opera House, with notable speakers and performers.

Cedar Falls May 23 Special John A H Jeffers aged 72 died after a long illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 30 p m conducted by Rev Bie K M Jones of Waterloo with burial in Fairview. He lived here nearly 10 years and is survived by his wife and children John Wayne in Canada and Mrs Fred Houghand of Watertown Mrs Riley Buckmaster wife of Dr K A Buckmaster and a granddaughter.
In Lima Ohio on May 2 the Democratic judicial convention of sixteen northwestern counties endorsed William Jennings Bryan for president. Delegates cheered, lamenting his 1904 renomination loss to the trusts and predicting a 1908 acclamation by the national party. W G Hubbard and wife depart for Albert Lea to visit Hendann and enjoy outdoor recreation.
Des Moines hosts the Prohibition state convention to nominate candidates for state offices. The meeting notes a 4 to 4 split on independent work and cooperation with other prohibition groups. Rev. J. S. Corkey of Jefferson is praised as temporary chair and touted as a possible governor candidate. Father Coffin, aged eighty four, arrives seeking a younger nominee to lead a vigorous campaign.

Commissioner Beck reports Wisconsin liquor industry total property value at 33.5 million, with 26.3 million in real estate and the rest in fixtures and sundries. Annual government revenue from liquor is 8.38 million. Delegates attend Wisconsin Anti-Saloon League meeting as sessions open.

The Burlington Hawk-Eye reports the steel amphitheatre for Waterloo's Ghautauqua grounds will not be finished by July 4 as planned. Des Moines May 28. Father Colin founder of the convicts home in Fort Dodge and a noted temperance worker among railway employees will retire as the prohibition party convention candidate for governor. No other candidate named.
