In Janesville Iowa on May 10 the George den’s superintendent hosted a successful gathering with strong attendance and receipts. A Sunday note announced a cupper at D Gr Boomer’s home Friday 4 to 7. Rain on Monday night followed a sand and windstorm on Sunday as Neighbors Institute formed Wednesday night and Shaw adds minor improvements.

Coat theft arrests sweep through Reinbeck
A tough character sold wire coat forks last week and vanished. Dr. Conner reported a new $84 fur coat missing from his office. A hobo named J. W. McCarty was arrested near the railway tracks after witnesses linked him to the coat sale. Robt. Paige of Grutdy Center later returned the coat to Dr. Conner for repayment. McCarty’s case was sent to the September grand jury after preliminary hearing. Miss Ida Copley was elected to teach fifth grade in West Waterloo schools. Miss Amanita Vogt leaves the Courier for Waterloo work. Mrs. Dr. Bronson has been ill with throat trouble but improving.

Death of Mack Clark in Vinton La Porte area
Mack Clark a former Spring Creek resident died at his home in Vinton last Saturday after a period of ill health. Born April 4 1866 in Black Hawk county he was the son of Henry and his wife. He married Anna Revel in 1890 and had two children Charles and Amos. The family moved to Vinton five months ago due to ill health. He bore his suffering with patience and fortitude.

Des Moines May 18 The Red Book will be the first in a new standard size cloth bound edition authorized by law with a 40,000 print run. The federal grand jury indicted John A Wheatley and George F Wittich of Keokuk on using the mails to promote an elaborate Iowa lottery scheme run under the Town Jewelry and Goodyear Mackintosh names. Supposed associate Jerry Harrington of Keokuk was not charged. The promoters built a fortune and operated a saloon and gambling hall, with prizes of diamonds and mechanical devices, but authorities secured indictments after a long probe.
