Link denied any Sangamon county offers and stated $1 000 was paid later for his vote, not in Sangamon. Burke paused further cross examination to avoid interfering with a Chicago trial and moved to secure co operation with Cook county prosecutors.

A skylight shattered as Israel Grigur stood on a roof with a comet party. He fell four stories sustaining a skull fracture and was expected to die. Sioux City May 11 Oliver Hoffman Barrett aged 61 veteran ball player and said to be the oldest athlete in the United States died Saturday night at St. Josephs hospital of heart failure after months of illness. He played for Ponca Neb for many years and in a last summer season pitched winning games at age 60. Barrett claimed to be first western player to throw a curve ball, learned forty years ago. Born in Waverly Ind he never married and is survived by two brothers Rev Mandus Barrett of Calumet Minn and a brother believed in Ames Ind Interment will be at Waverly.
Washington May 17 President Taft explained how his letter exonerating Ballinger and dismissing Glavis was prepared, details presented to the Ballinger Pinchot committee by Chairman Nelson. Brandeis pressed that the memorandum behind the letter originated in Ballinger's department and Lawlor aided it. Kerby discharged interior stenographer testified about the memorandum and his public statements and the risk to his position. He described meetings with newspaper men and a Cleveland reporter, and noted a promised newsroom job if he stayed quiet. He cited Brown and Garfield's involvement and defended disclosing the information under the circumstances.

Dr Loren B Doxey and Mrs Doxey may demand separate trials with the state choosing precedence. Experts on morphine and poisons will testify as the case proceeds. The Doxeys are charged with killing Erder to obtain life insurance.
Jefferson City May 17 Wm Powers of Grundy county paroled from the penitentiary on his promise to wed Miss Nannie Snapp. Powers was convicted last June for aiding prisoners to escape from Trenton jail and sentenced to 16 years. Unkind treatment or failure to follow bride’s views may land him back in the penitentiary.
Dubuque Ja May 17 Evening Press reports a log raft towed by steamer North Star struck a sandbar north of the city Sunday night. The impact severed the raft and logs escaped due to the river’s unusually low stage for this time of year.
The Elks lodge in Marshalltown Iowa opened a new home with a May 17 dedication attended by about 500 people. Jerry Sullivan of Des Moines spoke at the evening event.
