Cedar Rapids March 23 Mrs Annie Holly 2 Progress accused of hugging men in dark alleys and robbing them. She allegedly seized victims made proposals while rifling their pockets and is charged with several robberies involving substantial sums of money.
Cedar Rapids reports Frank Benish a local farmer near Shellsburg ended his life by hanging today amid financial reverses. At Dewitt Iowa Ross Vickery an All years old boy and Mrs F C Gearhart aged 29 of Lyons were killed instantly by a fast train at the Chicago and Northwestern station while searching for a mentally deranged daughter who had escaped. Mrs Gearhart and Vickery were crossing the tracks when the train struck. Mrs Page escaped unharmed. The incident prompted further notice on civil matters from Cedar Rapids where the United Brethren annual conference adjourned after a harmonious session highlighting home missions church erection and education. The stationing list named many communities and ministers.
Ex president Theodore Roosevelt and son Kermit depart New York aboard the Hamburg for East Africa in search of big game. Scranton Pa March 23 United Mine Workers convention adjourned for recess after organizing. It was learned today that coal companies will not grant the usual 30 cent per ton coal reduction on April first if a strike is declared.
Washington dispatch reports President Taft will offer Harvard President Charles W. Eliot the U S ambassador to Great Britain. Taft and Secretary of State seek a scholar with broad knowledge and suiting diplomatic skill. Eliot’s acceptance remains uncertain as Washington hosts Harvard alumni. Cedar Falls Considers Milk Inspection Ordinance. The Cedar Falls city council will review a draft milk inspection ordinance prepared by the city solicitor with strong support for inspection.
Des Moines reports show the house refused to adopt a committee report delaying the liquor permit requirement for druggists. The senate passed measures closing the hunting season for game birds until 1914, and enacted a bounty on ground hogs. Railroad-related bills were referred back to committees. Saloon interests will receive a Senate committee hearing Thursday on prohibition.
Calgary reports on how southern Alberta shifted from vast open ranches to wheat farming following a flood of American settlers from 1899. Land values skyrocketed from grazing to ten to twenty dollars an acre, driving ranchers back to the foothills as plains turned into a sea of grain.
