Vaderland Tragedy at Sea Leaves Ten Dead and Quarantine

New York Jan 27 Ten steerage passengers died on the Vaderland from congestion of the lungs and pneumonia after arriving from Antwerp on Jan 24. The ship was sent back to quarantine and 760 passengers were barred from landing. An investigation opened with six witnesses, probing death causes, food safety, medical care, air quality, and sanitary conditions aboard. Eight bodies buried at sea. autopsies ordered and bacteriological tests to follow. The Vaderland to be fumigated under quarantine supervision. The voyage began Jan 14. deaths occurred on Jan 20 22 and 23 28.

Waverly Installs Two New Mayors in One Night

Waverly Iowa reports a special city council meeting where mayoral terms shifted. Frank Duce resigned. Jay Morton was chosen to fill an unexpired term. H G Nichols, former two term mayor, was elected but initially refused notification. After deliberation the council unanimously supported Morton while Lee reportedly resigned for personal business.

Pam Strayer, steward of the Black Hawk county poor farm, took 18 year old resident Husdonpillar to Glenwood Iowa for admission to the boys department. The youth born in western Iowa is believed to be slow in mental faculties and has lived at the county establishment after earlier life in Dewar and on farms.
