New York Jan 27 Ten steerage passengers died on the Vaderland from congestion of the lungs and pneumonia after arriving from Antwerp on Jan 24. The ship was sent back to quarantine and 760 passengers were barred from landing. An investigation opened with six witnesses, probing death causes, food safety, medical care, air quality, and sanitary conditions aboard. Eight bodies buried at sea. autopsies ordered and bacteriological tests to follow. The Vaderland to be fumigated under quarantine supervision. The voyage began Jan 14. deaths occurred on Jan 20 22 and 23 28.
