Mrs E A Hovey a longtime Independence and Marshalltown area settler died after a fall fractured her right hip. She was 76 and survived by two sons Maurice of Marshalltown and Silas of Independence. Soldier Boy of Dunkerton Buried
Dunkerton January 18 The funeral of Elza J Carnes was held at the Free Methodist church. He was born near Dunkerton August 21 1881 and died January 8 1910. He enlisted at Sacramento Calif July 20 1902 served in Company I 19th Infantry later transferred to Co B 13th Infantry at Angel Island Calif where he received an honorable discharge in August 1905. He rose to sergeant before illness and heart weakness caused death. He leaves a father mother three brothers and one sister and many friends. Interment in Lester Center cemetery. Elder W W Vinson of Knoxville led the service with pallbearers Charles Dewald Charles Magee J H Cowlishaw George McNellis Olin and John Goff. Relatives Mrs W Nogs from Frankfort SD and Alfred Brown from Waterton also attended.

Dead man exhumed from snow bank near Dubuque
