Pioneer of Hardin Co. Temperance settler Pattee

From Friday's Daily: George Pattee, an early Hardin County settler, visited the city yesterday. He helped found Hardin City in 1854 near Rockford, a boom town that grew rapidly with many saloons, prompting temperance neighbors to leave. The town declined as buildings faded, leaving only remnants now vanished. Pattee later moved to Eliora and is living in Ackley.

Catching a Giant Badger on Sans Souci Farm

A seventy pound badger, one of the region’s largest, was trapped last night on the D. 8. Johnson farm near Sans Souci. Carl Thompson, the hired man, tried to spare the animal but it fought fiercely and was shot by Mr Johnson. Tracks had led locals to believe a wolf prowled the area. An attempt may be made to capture the animal’s mate.

Grace Toering Dips Ice While Crossing River Keeping Safe

Independence notes report Miss Grace Toering, living with sister Mrs. BE W Lusby, walked onto the ice and fell into the river when crossing to the east bank. Ice deception from snow filled channel left her in an icy bath but she suffered no harm as help arrived promptly. Also dated news: Sarah Williams Brackhart wed Marcelis Lara in San Francisco December 19. they will reside at 1636 Haight Street. Frank Devendorf friends celebrate Ridgeway home welcome with Morris chair gift and an $80 ladies auxiliary check. Mayor Lutkamp and City Engineer Guernsey visited Dubuque for city affairs including discussion of a new fire alarm whistle amid objections by firemen. Mr and Mrs H Burlingham report arrival in Los Angeles and rest with relatives near that city. Burlingham expected to regain health with a period of rest.

First Baptist church annual meeting and trustees elected

The First Baptist church held its annual meeting and family reunion in the church parlors with supper and social time. Trustees A J Edwards and G V Fowler were elected for three years. Officers named: Richard Holmes President, Edwin Mesick Secretary, J R Vaughan Treasurer, Jerris T Drew Financial Secretary, C D Woodmansee Solicitor, A J Cole Trustee for Mission Chapel. Secretary Mesick reported solid finances with salaries and expenses listed including pastor’s salary, fuel, repairs, and anniversaries.

Sale of Cedar Valley Manufacturing Company

A sale of the Cedar Valley Manufacturing company to Minneapolis parties was completed recently. The factory will not reopen immediately but will operate on a larger scale with Dr. Johnson retained as general manager for the present. The Cedar Valley plant, a leading wood working shop in Iowa, employed sixty to seventy workers and produced doors sash and other building materials.

The couple, married January 14 1855 in Janesville Wisconsin, arrived in Cedar Falls in 1855 and have since helped shape local life with ventures from the first piano and kerosene lamp to the citys first livery stable and bus line. They have two sons three daughters six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The celebration honors a life of pioneer work and steadfast community service.
