Engineer Louis Shull and fireman Edward McVey faced a runaway Chicago and Northwestern fast mail No 10 at seventy five miles per hour. Shull, burned and injured, crawled from the cab to halt the express beyond Belle Plaine by freeing the air brake rope as the messenger opened the door. Denison January 9 Fred Novell a Syrian peddler was found dead beside a creek in a brush patch four miles northwest of Denison His wagon was struck by an Illinois Central freight Sunday morning and he vanished The body with two bullet holes skull crushed and pockets rifled was found by hunters The murder for robbery appears clear though no suspects are named An inquest was held this morning.

Newton Iowa yesterday saw a county court house clash as two boards of supervisors named rival peace officers. Pred Padre, a Republican, held the office under padlock while Frank Russell, a Democrat, controlled the jail, following the death of M B Moberly who would have been installed Monday. The old Republican majority board appointed Padre. the new Democratic board countered at twelve fifteen AM Monday and named Russell as sheriff to block the earlier action.

Dubuque January 9 Tudge Benson challenges two grand jurors on grounds they served on the panel while election judges. Named are Charles Fless Liberty township and S. T. Martin Cascade township.
