Nebraska farmer charged with murder brought to Des Moines

Des Moines, Jan. 2. Charles Thomas, accused of murdering Mabel Schofield in 1899, was brought to Des Moines from Nebraska by Deputy Sheriff B J Ness. He arrived at 10 o'clock with his wife and parents, and was placed in the jail awaiting trial, while his mother cried and his father spoke of his son's innocence. Thomas, found on a Verdigris-area farm 150 miles northwest of Omaha, had expected to gain liberty on arrival and refused to discuss the case, saying little beyond “Not damned worth.” The wife accompanied him, likely remaining in Des Moines until the trial.
