Marble Rock social notes report Mrs Lew Sours and Mrs WH Smith hosting forty ladies for a one o’clock luncheon with a musical and literary program. Attendees included Cedar Rapids visitors and Des Moines guests. Reinbeck items note Hazel Minton visiting Marshalltown and local families visiting relatives, with several trips to Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
Absent Floyd Bostwick returns from eighteen hundred miles westward and visits most states except California. Mrs. Fred Buhrow sells 120 acres north of town to Adolph Kness for 69 per acre. J Schwein handles the deal. Local businesses brighten with fresh paint. A H Panzer ships cars of fine stock and cattle weekly. Various residents travel to Waterloo and Frederika for sights and social visits. The little ball nine win 22 to 21 over business men in ten innings. Livery barn sold to William Tegtmier. Several births, visits, and birthdays noted including a girl born August 2 to Ernest Fink and wife. Confirms a July excursion to Waterloo and life at August Otto home.
Greene Ang Charles Paysite arrived from Indian Territory Sunday to visit old friends and relatives. Others referenced include Orman Hood family departing for Austin Minnesota, L K Reed and F H Camp visiting Charles City friends, Rev B W Soper vacationing at Stanwood Indiana and other state points. A forty five foot monument for O C Perrig lot arrived and is moved to Rose Hill cemetery for erection this week.
In Fairbank Aug 1 a Catholic church wedding united Myrtle Hayes and Alva Jardee of Waterloo. A large family reunion honored Mrs Kate Holdiman's 80th birthday with 70 attendees in Lester township. Local social notes list visitors from Reinbeck Cedar Rapids Independence and Waterloo and a wedding dinner celebration.
Mrs Murphy and children and Mrs Herman Clausing and children visited Waterloo Thursday. Mr and Mrs Bruns were in Waterloo Wednesday. Miss Beria Bennett returned Wednesday from Washburn. Mrs John Moringhaus was in Waterloo Tuesday. Fred Weigert hosted friends for his birthday. Milas Jetere Russell of Waterloo helps at the forest Leleyphone office. Local society ladies enjoyed a picnic supper Thursday afternoon. Mrs Burge and daughter Bertha visited relatives in Waterloo Tuesday. Mrs Lobeck of Readiyn visited daughters Bertha and Mrs Will Greaning last week. Wil Koelling made a Waterloo call Tuesday. Miss Helen Therding of Gurion, tn, visiting Mrs George Moguer. Mira Hennett and Mrs city and Jink Farnsworth spent Saturday with Bas Lillian Clark at Way.
Saturday and Sunday visits marked by relatives and friends across Klinger Cedar Falls Winslow Grundy Center and Waterloo. Births christenings and anniversaries are noted along with trips by Buss Schmidt Schrader and Erickson families and a birthday surprise for Henry Omhling Jr.
Bennington Township reports social visits and local happenings from Aug. P. Bradgow’s visit to Rev. Zellinger in Waterloo to farm work updates. J R Page travels east, Maine, while Dunkerton Enterprise debuts with Laval as editor. Miscellaneous tales cover hog sales, music lessons by Alissa Connelly, threshing schedules, and farm labor details.
Raymond and Mrs Ritchie of Le Mars visited Mrs Ritchie's sister Mrs Harvey Riegel with their two children. Mrs L E Park and children from Waterloo spent a day with Mrs Thomas Phillips. Miss Cathrine Smith visited Cedar Falls friend Miss Ruth Lusted. Mrs B W Heiple and daughter Florence from Waterloo visited Mrs Heiple's mother Mrs E D Marble. Dr Phillips returned from Wisconsin after two weeks visiting relatives. Womens Home Missionary Society met at Mrs John Holler's in Waterloo with a large delegation and a bountiful dinner. Esther Dusted of Cedar Falls visited Miss Glyde Waterfield mid week. Gene Redmond of Samar Cole, former resident, is visiting friends. Victor Phillips is home from out of town for a few days. Mrs Van Allen visited at Mrs Medd's. Alma Shepherd of Waterloo visited cousin Miss Osa Fierce. Marguerite Herman and cousin from Waterloo visited Mrs Menty Miller's sister Miss Gertrude Fischels. Miss Linzi Pinedela and others visited. Mina Alice Klaperman spent Sunday at home. The show here the past week concluded Saturday night.
A week of voting crowned Miss Rose Litdner as the most popular lady who received a diamond ring from the show company. Afterward the group dispersed to Gilbertsville for the upcoming week. E W Helple of Waterloo visited with wife and daughter Florence. Rev. Preston, former pastor of Mr and Mrs S Taylor, preached at the Methodist church. Epworth League social planned at J H Douglass home next Friday August 9. Mr and Mrs Schrade drove from Waterloo for dinner with Rey and Mrs Hawn.
Vinton August 7 Special Officer Charles Baumgardner, under preliminary hearing for second degree murder after shooting Frank Finney on July 4, was held to the grand jury in 3000 dollar bonds. The two day proceeding in Benton county’s new courthouse kept testimony to the prosecution, with Baumgardner hoping to present sufficient evidence later to prove self defense. Public opinion largely supports the officer amid condemning shooting by officers without justification. Baumgardner, described as a small man, faced several assailants the night of the incident.
Senator La Follette calls for confiscation of trust properties as punishment for Standard Oil ruling. He says fines are insufficient and urges penalties that seize half a company’s value for the first offense and half again for the second to deter future violations.
Denver August 7 Attorney Clarence S Darrow who won a verdict of not guilty for William D Haywood in his trial for the alleged murder of former Governor Stennenberg of Idaho has been dismissed from the service of the Western Federation of Miners and will not appear as counsel for the defense in the Pettibone case on October 1 In Darrows place as chief attorney of the organization will appear Richardson Hawkins of Denver E F Richardson who conducted the cross examination of witnesses in the Haywood trial and H N Hawkins one of the shrewdest criminal lawyers in the Rocky Mountain region
Katherine Eddy of Chicago married Senator Beveridge of Indiana in Berlin at the American embassy. Maid of honor was Miss Helen Birch. best man was Senator William Dillingham of Vermont. Guests included the bride’s parents, Mr and Mrs Spencer Eddy, relatives, and Ambassador and Mrs Charlemagne Tower. A wedding breakfast followed the ceremony.
Thomas Scott, claimed to be Ohio's oldest man at 118, died at Seneca County Infirmary after three years’ residence. Born July 4, 1794, in Halifax County North Carolina, records show his father was a Cherokee and his mother a mulatto.
Chicago reports an offensive and defensive alliance form between Standard Oil and railroads in ongoing indictments. The arrangement allegedly aims to block government access to testimony and company books during future trials, with secret meetings in Standard Oil offices. Jamestown, N Y, will host next indictments on rebates, as O R Pagin travels from Chicago.
Milwaukee Aug. Associated Press reports former Alderman Kuschbert and chauffeur Geo Foss were killed and Horace Sloan fatally injured when their car went into a ditch at Brookfield Corners early today.
Wilbur Gienn Voliva declares he will move his followers from Zion City unless the lace factory is not transferred to Marshall Field & Co. Judges had accepted the bid, risking the town becoming non Zion. Land deals and a 5,000 acre hold by Voliva supporters loom as possible outcomes. Attendees at tent services numbered 1,800 amid a 4,800 population. Col. J. B. Aluart noted no mail-matter complaints.
Dike Iowa August 1 a showing of a solid school system with two teachers resigning to join Waterloo schools. Edith Porter moves from intermediate grade duties to East Waterloo while principal Marty Moore takes a post in West Waterloo. C W Roadman, a valued local, slated for another year in West Waterloo, and his sister Velma gains a position in Le Mars.
A family southeast of Joyce Iowa was wiped out by a cyclone as a second storm near Hanlontown and Clear Lake killed at least two and injured about a dozen. Homes and barns were destroyed, cottages overturned, and trees stripped as the narrow storm path carved a four mile long, fifty foot wide track.
A late afternoon cyclone raked Reinbeck Iowa and nearby countryside, unroofing buildings, shattering store windows, uprooting trees, and destroying windmills. Debris filled streets as javelin-like 2x4s and fallen structures injured livestock and damaged property. a lightning strike at Ban Davis’s farm killed a cow and stunned a farmer. Reports across towns say about twenty windmills toppled with many store fronts blown in and rain intrusion noted.
