Des Moines teachers contemplate higher salaries as gown prices rose from five to fifteen dollars, triggering a petition and a proposed four dollar monthly raise for veteran staff. The move follows surging living costs and rent increases noted in the district.
Marshall Council No. 966 of the Rights of Columbus will confer the first second and third degrees in Marshalltown on Sunday May 2. A class of about sixty candidates will be initiated with Hon T Z Fitzpatrick of Dubuque assisting. A banquet for four hundred will follow with noted Iowa speakers Judge Wade from Fort Dodge Mason City and Rev Father Nugent from Des Moines among presenters.
A new Farmers Co operative Exchange with 20000 authorized capital organized in La Porte City. It will trade in farm products mill stuff building material livestock coal and lumber and may grind feed. Shares worth 50 cents 50 dollars and voting rights tied to capital. initial officers include President Phil H Kaiser Vice President C Hoppe Secretary B F Koeher Treasurer Oscar Miles.
Bert Thompson gains a new phonograph. The Jesup creamery paid 28 cents net for batter in March. BH Rose remains on the sick list with high fever but shows some improvement. Attenden Baldwin, long in Dakota land interests, visits home then travels to Offwein to join a Narher shop. Highland Nobles of Castle 47 met Wednesday evening followed by a banduet at Frink hotel.
Mrs. C. S. Newromb returns home with daughter in Ypcorta while Ray Stoddard, Shell Rock Banking cashier, greets a new son. A benefit play at the Union Depot drew crowds. another performance is set for May 1. Charles Remington and Frances Newcomb plan to seek work in Seattle and Spokane. Mrs. J. T W. Carter returns from Tampa. Miss Helen Stewart heads to Walla Walla with her mother declining.
Herman Myers was dragged under a Rock Island freight train between Seventeenth and eighteenth streets yesterday afternoon. His left leg was severed and later amputated at the knee to the ankle. Witness Mrs. G King reported seeing two men along the track and Myers pleading for warmth after the injury.
A morning wedding at 11 at 216 Walnut Street united Miss Agnes A. McFarlane and Mr. Frank C. Wight with Rev. George W. Hinkle presiding. The ceremony included a welding breakfast by Mrs. A. W. McFarlane and Miss Carrie McFarlane. The couple, both connected to Waterloo, plan a trip east and south before settling at 131 Logan Avenue after their return. Mrs. W. A. Robertson of Cedar Rapids attended as a guest.
Adele Boas, 33, daughter of Arthur Boas a millionaire thread maker, disappeared Friday then surfaced at her home in New York. Doctors report she is in perfect health and the trip was a childish whim. She had worked in a Boston restaurant, earning about 2.36 weekly, then rode to New York via South Station before being identified in Stamford, Connecticut.
An odd three legged newborn colt at the J H Grady home in Orange township astonishes with a fore limb growing from the chest. The hind legs are proper but the colt cannot balance on three weak legs and may have to be killed.
Webster City teachers protest a proposed school board rule to ban attending card parties theatres and dances on the eve of school days. They warn a walkout or resignations could follow and argue the plan clashes with modern life though wages remain comparatively high.

A Justice Department official and an Interstate Commerce Commission agent will examine alleged combinations and unjust despotic rates impacting lines across multiple carriers including Santa Fe, Burlington, Rock Island, Colorado Midland, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and others. Attorney General Wickersham and Commissioner Lane coordinate with state reps, notably Utah, amid discrimination and rebates charges.

Davenport announces the death of W D Wells a longtime educator who served as Davenport high school principal and later as county superintendent of schools. Born in 1858 in Rutland PA he taught across Iowa including Le Claire Grundy Center and Ames before moving to Davenport in 1897. He died after a long illness with tuberculosis of the kidneys in April. He leaves Kate Moore and six children Lois Leon Ben Helvena DeWitt Lydia and a sister Mrs E G Ellsworth.
A fire in Des Moines destroyed the Boody block the Meele block and the Martindale flats on Sixth Avenue with losses around 200000 partly insured. Several women escaped narrow caps by being carried to safety by firefighters.
