A lad found a blood stained box with clothing and child pictures bearing the name Lawrence. Police suspect a child kidnapping or murder. no missing boy reported. Authorities plan a daylight riverfront search as they weigh the box’s distance travel and the likely victim.
In Janesville on a Sunday night Mr and Mrs George Burkhart narrowly escaped death when a belt of lightning struck their horses tearing the harness away and wrecking it The bolt also struck nearby telephone wires tearing them down both occupants escaped with a shock and the horses were only somewhat injured It was a close call
Miss Flora Wilson daughter of Agriculture Secretary Wilson made her American debut as a singer at the Plaza grand ballroom. Her sympathetic vibrant soprano drew praise from British German French Swiss critics and many prominent guests. Notables included Mrs Taft Mrs Sherman and Senator Depew as patronesses. Mr Flack presided at the piano with Herbert Waterous and Karl Klein assisting. The program ranged from Bellini to Tschaikowsky with English and Scotch songs near the end.

Jay Sprague found a pocketbook with 25 dollars and brought it to the Progress Review. The owner, P. J. Jackman of Watering, was missing the money on the road between town and fair grounds. Jackman identified the purse and money by name papers and later paid Sprague $10 as a reward. Jackman arrived in La Porte City to receive the remaining sum of 15.
Judge Cochran of the United States circuit court in Govington Kentucky instructed the jury to render a verdict for W S Henderson in the famous night rider case as of April 16 Cincinnati. The instruction follows the claim that damages for shocks to feelings arise from an invasion of personal liberty.

Bantry North Dakota April 16 A mysterious murder was uncovered yesterday when the body of a well dressed man was found hidden in a straw stack on farmer Robert Rackham’s place one mile south of Bantry. A bullet hole pierced the skull above the eye and the body showed no identifying marks. Almost every tooth bore gold fillings, and detectives believe the crime occurred last fall as authorities search for clues and possible identity.
Washington April 16 The executive session of the American Federation of Labor decided to urge organized labor and reform forces to begin agitation and prepare to act in the next congressional election for legislation favorable to labor. Labor men should participate in the May Chicago congress for international peace. Secretary Morrison reported on six months’ growth and activities, while President Gompers quoted a sympathy letter from the German trade unions’ general committee for free speech and free press.

Sunday school and choir offered an Easter program of songs and recitations.

Easter services at the M E church were held with league services canceled due to an approaching storm. Postmaster Howe invested in a new Oliver typewriter for the business office. A contract with Bowen & Son for water power improvements, a concrete dam, grist mill, power plant, and woolen mill was discussed and approved, aiming to complete the dam this fall and operate the power for twenty years.

Mme Lillian Nordica of the Mutropolis Opera company has announced plans to marry George W Young, a New York banker and club member. After months of rumor and brief denials, the formal announcement came at a Hotel Plaza dinner, with no wedding date yet set possibly for next month.
San Francisco April 16 Three hundred guests mainly laborers at the three story St George hotel on Howards street were panicked as the building burned. Six men severely burned and at least twenty guests unaccounted for after the frame structure burned. six bodies recovered but charred beyond identification with eight to ten more believed buried in the debris.
Samuel White a pioneer of Orange township aged 73 lies seriously ill at his home. He came to Black Hawk bounty at age 20 and has lived 53 years on the same farm in Orange township. Family urges him to town but he prefers the quiet country home and manages part of his farm.
William J Veach died after a brief pneumonia illness at 1250 PM on his Cedar Falls Waterloo area job site. Born November 1 1867 in Epworth Dubuque County Iowa he married Mary Toner in 1859. He leaves wife three children ages 9 8 and 6 two brothers and two sisters. Burial plans set for Pleasant Grove Catholic Cemetery after a funeral in Farley Iowa.
Edward Speer died at the county home this afternoon at 2 o'clock after two years as an inmate. He was about 45, married with no children, and relatives have not yet been located. His body was taken to O'Keefe & Towne undertakers for burial arrangements pending notice to relatives.
Jacob Cohen aged 3 years 9 months died after spending up to twenty hours stranded on a tenement roof on the east side. Neighbors heard crying Tuesday night. Janitor located the unconscious child on the roof, soaked and cold near a chimney. Parents said they believed he slept in another room and could not explain how he reached the roof three quarters of a mile away.
