A blaze yesterday swept both business and residential sections of Newberry, a 3000 population town thirty miles southeast of Laurens. Estimated loss reaches 200000 with 85000 insured. About fifty homes destroyed and a dozen business buildings ruined. Within two hours the water supply was exhausted, leaving the town at the mercy of the flames.

Rule Fortune reports that Abe Ruef, once a little known lawyer, is to be examined by the San Francisco grand jury investigating municipal graft. Bank employees who held his cash will testify with ledgers. Detective Burns traced the money, parts of which have reportedly vanished since the inquiry began, including increases in Ruef's cash balances after key franchises were granted.
Igaga March 24 reports a railway probe titled General Public. A newly hired inspector visits lines to evaluate conduct toward passengers, station efficiency, baggage handling, ticket facilities, and train punctuality. Reports inform executives to improve customer service and operations.
A Madrid crowd feared the queen’s collapse as aides reported a sudden indisposition. The English physician treated her, the ailment proved temporary, and the queen recovered. Doctors advised shortening the king’s visit to Cadiz before meeting King Edward.

Representative Charles I. Scott told Kansas City readers that excavation work for the isthmian canal could be finished in six to seven years. He cautioned that the Gatun Dam and the massive locks may extend the total completion time, though workers remain optimistic the project could end within seven years if conditions stay favorable.
In St Louis Massachusetts Circuit Court Judge Matt G Reynolds dismissed John Green's petition for divorce from Anna M Green. He ruled that Mrs Green's daily beer consumption, allegedly a case a day, did not prove grounds for divorce since Green knew of her beer habit before marriage. A grocer testified he delivered about 100 bottles to the Greens in October 1906.
United States dispatch boat Mayflower reached Colon early today bearing Secretary Daft and his party from Charleston. The voyage was uneventful and all members are in good health according to AP.

Mystic Shriners in Sioux City organize to secure a city temple after a successful regional meeting. Officers include Will H. Beck president and George E. Ward secretary. Delegates will confer with Za Ga Zig temple in Des Moines and with Alvah P. Clayton in St. Joseph for imperial support ahead of the Los Angeles conclave. Surrounding temples from Cedar Rapids Davenport Omaha Sioux Falls Chicago and New York have pledged backing.
In Washington on March 30 the Western Central and Eastern trunk lines filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission tariffs raising rates on eastbound grain and grain products. The increase takes effect about April. The move follows earlier expressions of intent by the railroads.
