Iowa coal inquiry aims to curb profiteering and boost regulation
Fort Dodge Iowa September 30 John Fletcher assistant attorney general in charge of the coal profiteering investigations for the state department of justice outlined progress in the coal inquiry. He warned of possible criminal action if evidence justifies it. He said profits run into millions and that production and prices indicate collusion with limited capacity. He noted prices ranging from four to six dollars per ton across Iowa and urged swift, thorough action to inform the legislature and public about the situation. He also suggested federal intervention could be forced if fair play fails, and described a sharp response from operators after the inquiry began.
