Dubuque Man Waived Hearing In Hoffmann Assault Case
William J Thomas Jr 32, son of a wealthy Worthington area farmer, waived preliminary hearing on charges of criminally assaulting Mrs Lea Hoffmann 22 near Dubuque Iowa. He was held to the October grand jury on 15000 bond after confessing to Sheriff Kennedy and County Attorney Willing. Thomas identified as the assailant by Hoffmann. He pled not guilty to weapon claim, later admitting guilt, and was taken to the county jail. Mrs Hoffmann, a spring bride of under 100 pounds, was attacked when alone after her husband and his brother left for Dyersville with a load of wood. The assailant wore blue overalls an undershirt and used an automobile veil to hide his face. Police notes say there were no threats of violence. Drafted Thomas previously served in the Army.
