Prison Break Tragedy Shocks Nebraska Penitentiary
Lincoln, Sept 29. An attempted prison breakout left convicts and guards dead and wounded as Fred Brown and Roy Smith led a desperate dash from the state penitentiary. Brown, a life felon, had a long record of crime from childhood to adulthood, with multiple prison terms and a spree of burglaries, larceny and theft across multiple states. Warden Feston attributed the break to overcrowding as investigators probe how Brown smuggled rifles and bombs into the yard.

In May 1922 Brown enticed two women into a car and chained them in a hut. A nearby field worker intervened but was forced inside. Brown fled in the victim’s car. He was later captured after a gun battle in Wyoming, returned to Omaha, and given a life sentence for kidnapping.
