Escapee Vernon Cochrane Foiled by Fear of Capture

Vernon Cochrane aged 19, one of six prisoners who escaped from Black Hawk jail weeks ago, moved across the country evading officers. He had a sweetheart near Green Bay, reached the city in time but avoided exposure to avoid detection, later returning to his mother’s home in Waupun where he was buried after death. Sheriff Sheers received and transmitted the report from Waupun. Cochrane had briefly been in Waterloo before committing forgery and faced a continued trial set for September before Judge Platt. It is likely his fate would have mirrored the other escapees if he had remained honest. No further news of the others has been received.
