Des Moines Soldiers Preference Case Arguments Heard
In Des Moines on Sept 27 Judge James C. Hume heard arguments on the demurrer filed by W J Burbank treasurer of state against Fred McCutcheon seeking to compel Burbank to appoint him to the C C McCoy post under the soldiers preference act. Attorney General Gibson for the state and Ben I Salinger for McCutcheon spoke as 19 volunteer lawyers joined the case. The Iowa American Legion and other veterans groups asserted the act gives preference to ex soldiers with equal or superior qualifications. A Greene county ruling recently favored a school board in a similar matter. The judge took the case under advisement.
