Gray Haired Veto of Andersonville Recalled at Grand Army Meet
Des Moines reports the Grand Army of the Republic encampment opening in Iowa with veterans welcomed at state events. The program includes parades drills and 29 reunions, plus receptions at the state house. Officials note hospitality in quarters and honor nurses and auxiliaries, while old prison tales surface in remembrances of Andersonville. About 40,000 visitors are expected, with a notable gathering of nearly 100 Negro veterans planning a turnout and possible organizational steps for a Negro department. Rev. James Hatch, a long-missing prisoner, is recognized anew by attorney H. E. Dewey, confirming shared wartime memories and injuries from Chickamauga.
