British air forces broke up a German raid near London as crowds gathered for a wartime air show. Seven killed and 25 injured in southeast London outskirts. two raiders penetrated defenses, with bombs hitting dwellings. Anti aircraft fire and barrage dispersed remaining attackers.
The Lafayette squadron member Douglas MacMonagle of San Francisco was killed during a patrol with Lieut Lufbury and Sergeant Rockwell after an attack by eight German fighters. Rockwell rescued a comrade but MacMonagle fell within French lines. His body was recovered and funeral plans were announced with American military honors pending local support.
Paris dispatch reports Sergeant Douglas MacMonagle of San Francisco killed in a German fighter attack. His mother, a Pacific coast physician's widow, traveled 6,000 miles to visit him in Paris and faced the tragedy as he foretold she would. Lieutenant Lufbery is credited with downing another German craft. observers note German armor within French lines.
Lima Peru Sept 28 the Peruvian minister of Berlin to present to the German government a demand that satisfaction be given within eight days for the sinking of the Peruvian bark Lorton if the demand is not met diplomatic relations will be broken off. The Lorton was sunk inside Spanish waters last February by a German submarine. Peru declared the sinking unjustifiable and demanded indemnity while Germany offered to submit the case to a prize court.
London reports that women assume roles in English trade unions with a woman named as branch secretary of the national union of railwaymen at Ashton-under-Lyne. The era sees about five million women employed in agricultural, clerical, and industrial jobs across Great Britain alongside domestic workers and women in military, naval, and Red Cross hospitals.
Paris Sept 26 tobacco sent to American soldiers henceforth will enter France free of duty. Similar arrangements already have been made as regards British Belgian Russian and Portuguese troops fighting in France.
Paris reports Captain George Guynemer, a famed French aviator, officially listed as missing after departing Dunkirk on September 11. He is credited with 53 shootdowns and at least 25 more destroyed beyond count, becoming one of the era’s youngest senior officers after overcoming early rejections.
In Red Oak Virginia on September 20 a plea for life imprisonment and ware housing in a criminal insane hospital was urged by Fa ville for the state in the murder trial of Reverend Lyn George J Kelly tied to the Villiscaux slayings. Defense counsel Mitchell urged a verdict of not guilty by insanity if guilt were found. The case faced a state closing later today as Attorney General Wagner prepared to speak. The crowded courtroom heard defenses and government arguments about prior character and insanity.
International officers of the labor unions involved in a Norfolk navy yard strike with more than 3,000 mechanics urged local union leaders to return workers to the job while negotiations proceed to settle the dispute.
Senate and house conferees reached a basis for complete agreement on the two billion dollar war tax bill. The plan, to be presented to both houses tomorrow, hinges on a compromise excess profits tax system combining the house and senate plans for a gross levy near one billion dollars.
Federal agents seized I W W papers detailing a plan to incite Oklahoma farmers to take up arms against the draft. Officials say leaders aimed to trigger local disturbances, with false claims of uprisings in Missouri Kansas and Texas to embarrass the government. Arrests of ring leaders halted the plot before July 97.
London report in the Express says Brig. Gen. F. A. Maxwell V C D S O of Kitchener’s Indian staff was killed in action. It notes, except for Lieut. Gen. Birdwood, most of Kitchener’s Indian staff have perished in the war.
Col Theodore Roosevelt arrives in Chicago and visits Camp Grant in T. He plans a one and a half hour inspection then returns to deliver a speech at Dexter pavilion in the stockyards. He will address 18 000 soldiers and later tackle the topic Children of the Melting Pot while warning against disloyal Americans without soft wording.
Atlantic City Sept. 26 The flour distributing committee of the New York Produce Exchange, appointed by the federal food administration, sets prices for flour sold by the administration. Export patent flour at 13.25 per 220 pound sack, first clears 11.90 to 12.25 per sack. Peck praises city gardeners and urges bankers to aid farmers, stressing the middleman is to be targeted and that city gardens have produced vast food supplies to help wartime needs.
Germany agrees to evacuate Belgium only if Belgium allows unrestricted economic development, especially Antwerp, in a supplementary note to the Pope Benedict peace initiative. The verbal communication from Foreign Secretary Kuchlimann to the papal nuncio at Munich outlined the conditions for peace on evacuation terms.
Washington September 26 The Shipping Board announced plans to create an oceangoing merchant fleet of 1,600 ships by next year totaling about 9.2 million tons. Current American overseas tonnage stands at 2.5 million with 458 ships available. many German and Austrian vessels remain under U S operation. The Emergency Fleet Corporation has commandeered nearly 400 vessels and contracted for additional tonnage, with first launches expected in 50 to 90 days. Milwaukee news notes Great Lakes Transit Corporation takeover and end of freighting operations by October 2.
New York Sept 26 the inspection of ballots from last Wednesday's Republican primary reduces Mayor James L. Mitchell's lead over former State Senator William M. Bennett from 320 to 281 votes in the unofficial tally. An appeal for a recount is being prepared. Mitchell remains the Fusion Independent ticket nominee and emblem of the city party. Chicago September 26 Mayor William Hale Thompson announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for United States senator to succeed J Hamilton Lewis. He vows to vote on key governmental policies and withholds his formal platform until after Chicago’s spring aldermanic elections.
Washington Sept 26 Coal operators in Illinois Indiana Ohio and western Pennsylvania informed miners representatives they cannot meet a wage hike of about 26 percent unless government adjusts bituminous coal prices. A further conference with Dr H A Garfield coal administrator is expected as operators and miners debate wage demands across the central district.
In Paris on September 25 and 26 additional arrests emerged in the Bonnet Rouge affair. Jacques Landau, a reporter for the paper, testified about safe conducts for M. Duval to visit Switzerland. A suspicious check appeared on Duval after a Switzerland trip. Miguel Almereyda killed himself in custody amid sedition charges. Jean Goldschild, ex Bonnet Rouge staff, was seized for treasonable dealings with the enemy.
British and German forces clash along the Ypres sector with Haig resuming the offensive. News reports indicate the British advanced 1,000 to 1,200 yards on the northern battlefront while German resistance remained fierce. The wedge near the Ypres Menin road expands toward Lille and the Belgian coast as the British press to widen the salient.
