Wake Island marooning tale of James Westall survival
The account recounts James Westall, a landman aboard the ship Heatlee m sailing from San Francisco to Japan in 1801, who is betrayed by a captain and cast ashore on Wake Island. He endures three years alone, building a shelter, finding water, and surviving on shellfish and roots until an American whaling ship discovers him. The wreckage later confirms the vessel sank after a gale, while Westall recovers memories only after a shipboard agent helps him relearn language and life, living another fifteen years with modest means.
