Sioux City Indiana September 25 An increase of 407 pupils over last year marked the first day enrollment at the opening of schools last Tuesday totals announced by Supt M G Clark The total enrollment is 9304 Additional growth expected will push final totals toward 9500 Supt Clark estimated Also an advertisement urges stenographers bookkeepers and typists to register for a civil service night course starting September 30 at the College of Commerce.
Marshalltown Iowa September 25 members of advertising clubs from cities across the state met for the seventh annual convention of the Associated Advertising Clubs of Iowa. Attendance was down due to war related activities with 90 registered by noon at Marshalltown convention headquarters. The program emphasized war support and patriotic activities, with social features shortened.
Dubuque police praised Waterloo officers for a swift arrest of four automobile thieves captured Monday after a joy ride spree from Dubuque to a Wisconsin roadhouse. Emerson, the driver, and companions allegedly fired on a toll gate keeper and wrecked a car before stealing another in a garage.
Des Moines Sept 25 The state adjutant general's office is pushing the Sept 12 registration work statewide and speeding boards to meet Gen Crow der demands. Class 1 reports must be sent to the office by Oct 1.

In Dubuque Iowa on Monday 42 rats were killed by boy scouts under scout masters as part of a rat extermination campaign. Traps were set in old buildings alleys and other rat frequented places and some rats were dispatched with clubs or dogs. The drive aims to wipe out the pests and will continue daily.

Fifty seven Waterloo high school graduates from the last three years are eligible to enter the Town State Teachers' college students' army training corps. L H Hughes and Herbert F McDougal reported after reviewing graduate lists with S M Wallace and Fred J Miller. Students here receive gymnasium housing and meals from Mildred Walls Robinson, plus swimming, shower baths, and proximity to home, with good equipment and advantages superior to many other schools.
Grundy Center reports a resident sale as Cassaday sells his home to John Lacats of Wellsburg for 5500. Cassaday plans to rebuild, but not before spring. In another note Lewis Lynch pastures lambs in his front yard to save time and labor on mowing while wool markets rise. Ellsworth College announces a French language instructor from the French High Commission, Mlle. Maria F. Miache, to teach French across grades along with stenography courses. The campus will provide housing for military trainees without barracks, with a small unit under close supervision. Registration starts tomorrow for a three day period. The War Trophy Train drew crowds yesterday, stopping two hours and inspiring visits, as the Jackies band from Great Lakes performed before moving on to Eldora and Grundy Center.
Vinton reports Charles YB Hughes Jele Plaine left for Columbus to enter military service after failing regular service exam. He aims to be county attorney and plans to resume his business later. Wayne Wenner found a gold watch and chain on a horse tail, claiming the horse pulled it from his pocket.
