Railroads face steady freight rates despite rising costs

C J Markham president of the Illinois Central told a Sioux City luncheon that sustained railroad investment and service depend on private management. He blamed radicals for threatening government ownership and noted freight and passenger rates rose about 64 percent in ten years while wages and fuel costs climbed sharply. He argued farmers pay freight fairly and urged diversified farming as a hedge against rate pressures. He also referenced plans to expand rail networks with growing demand.
