In Des Moines and surrounding districts, Iowa coal miners and operators clash over wage demands. After initial $1.50 per day increases for day workers, tonnage pay and broader raises remain contentious, with miners split on accepting the contract and weighing demands for a larger increase. A Monday meeting will consider the miners' committee report as talks pause on reopening the wage controversy.
Des Moines reports the Prohibition party filed petitions to name thirteen presidential electors for the coming general election. Listed electors include E H Collins Salem A Devans DeWitt A MacEachron J D Hughes Cresco F J Wilson Clarence J J Mullin Grinnell M Kurtzwell Altoona J T Dean Chariton R Mitchell Red Oak M A Hughbett Fort Dodge John Williams Moville BE Haskman Clarinda Carl S Lewis Marshalltown electors at large. The ticket was chosen by petition after failing to reach ballot designation threshold in the last election.
Dubuque Tenn Sept 1 the steamer G W Hill of the Wisherd line was seized by Deputy U S Marshal P Houston at 5 p m after an admiralty court action by John Pearson former pilot who seeks 569 dollars in wages and bonuses under a contract with the Wisherd company.

Des Moines Sept 18 An all day conference of the eleven district committeewomen of the Democratic party in the state will be held next Thursday at the women’s bureau headquarters in the Kirkwood hotel. Miss Anna Lawther and Mrs W Mauleby call the meeting to strengthen party organization. Dinner in Youngers tearoom with Polk county as hostess. Eleven district committeewomen listed including Mrs Alex R Miller Washington and Mrs Stephen A Swisher Iowa City.
Word from state Democratic headquarters that Vice President Thomas R. Marshall will visit Iowa on October 1 and 2. He will address Sioux City and Des Moines on the two dates, as big preparations go forward for a Saturday meeting in Des Moines featuring Claude T. Porter. Also noted are Democratic candidates Clyde Berring for governor, Chaplain W E Robb for Polk County sheriff, and local speaker John Pendergast.
Portland Iowa Sept 18 Sheriff F B Marsh Mason City was called to the Kehm farm to find a home wrecked by two truant children a 6 year old boy and 9 year old girl of John Carmody. They overturned furniture mixed flour sand sugar and powder damaged dishes and left the heavy stove standing. Estimated damage about 1000 dollars. The children were questioned and agreed to plead guilty in preliminary hearing.
An elderly reader from Ward 5 at Soldiers' Home in California reports relief from years of constriction using Foley Cathartine Tablets. The ad claims the tablets cause no pain or nausea and ease indigestion headaches and sour stomach. Sold everywhere.
Chester Pa Punch a Boston terrier owned by Jacob Menwahr at Sun village near here is being taken to Canada where he may enjoy life as trained. Early in life Punch received a saucer of beer daily. With proacier evil dog days followed. One half of one percent resulted in dismal howls and homemade hooch had too much kick. Advertising is always NEWS.
Reinbeck Iowa Sept 18 Haymond Reinick 27 who worked for Charles Shearn north of Reinbeck died suddenly Tuesday while in a field. He leaves a widow and daughter, parents, three sisters, and other relatives. Funeral services were Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev B Shear of the M E church. The report includes local marriages and relocations, with several names and future living plans in Reinbeck and nearby areas.
Mrs Lucy Mitchell of Ukiah California and the Sweetzer family on a Grant township farm are named. Alex Elliott is gravely ill with paralysis and given little chance of recovery. A son was born Wednesday to Mr and Mrs Charles Goodhue at Des Moines. Mr Goodwin formerly edited the Grundy Republican.
Winton Iowa September 18 Benton county fair closed amid strong attendance and thriving exhibits. Attendance neared 12 000 on Thursday and over 20 000 across the four day run. A pacing mare drew crowds daily with a best time of 2 11 84 while a horse died after a race. Exhibit tents and livestock showcased hogs cattle and horses, with exhibitors turned away for lack of space. Also notes include a county couple Nancy McMillan and Charles Hall marrying in a morning ceremony before a Chicago honeymoon.
