War pipe travels with soldiers across battles
Clarence W. LaGrave carved his name and unit on a French briere pipe during World War I while serving with the One Hundred Twenty-Ninth Infantry in the AEF. He carried it through fights and furloughs, then gave it to his father in Minneapolis. The pipe was later lost on a Pennsylvania train and recovered by a porter, and the tale ends with the father’s claim he would not part with the pipe.
