Father of America's Playgrounds to President Recreation Congress
Joseph Lea, studying law in Warvard, recalls America's first public play space, a sand garden in Boston. In 40 years he has seen 8,415 public playgrounds and recreation centers in 711 cities. He will chair the Twelfth National Recreation Congress, Oct 5–16, with 600 leaders discussing the future of public recreation. He coined the belief that the boy without a playground is the man without a job. He has long led social progress in Boston, and since 1810 has served as president of the Playground and Recreation Association of America, formed in 1906 by Roosevelt and others to aid cities in providing play spaces and leaders. The Asheville gathering in North Carolina will cover rural recreation, parks study, community music and drama, and youth recreation.
