Boy burglar sings hunger as motive in local store thefts
George Gardner, 19, charged with breaking and entering Beane clothing store in Grant Island Neb, relayed a detailed hunger driven crime story to deputy sheriff F. A. Robinson. He described traveling from Dubuque to Waterloo then Grand Island, surrendering to police after confessing at the chief’s urging. Gardner, claiming California roots with Spanish and French parentage, sought payback and expressed willingness to work off punishment rather than face reform school.
