Fifty Years in Waterloo Marked by Gates Residence
J C Gates observes the fiftieth anniversary of moving to Waterloo on September 17 1864 when he and his wife crossed the Mississippi at Dubuque and traveled eight hours to Waterloo. He recalls early Iowa railroads, prairies, and Waterloo’s 1860s growth including churches, schools, banks and shops, and notes many Civil War veterans and former business leaders now gone.
