Historic Sumner Bell Toll Recalls Mother of American Methodism
A Sumner Iowa church bell, gifted by J Brookfield of New Jersey, tolls in memory of Hannah Heck Brookfield and Barbara Heck, credited as Mother of American Methodism. The 1000 pound bell, installed 25 years ago, rings each service since 1890 with a yearly toll for anniversaries and prayers for future generations. Reverend G B Shoemaker notes the bell’s inscription and historical ties to early Methodism.
