The Story of Poland A Geographical Society Statement

The Poland of 1715 was larger than most European states except Russia, but two centuries ago its domain stretched about 690 miles east to west. Partitions in 1772 1783 and 1795, Congress of Vienna 1815, and subsequent rulings reduced Poland to fragments under Prussia Austria and Russia, with Cracow absorbed by Austria in 1846 and final independence attempts ending in 1863. The last remnants vanished, Poland remained under foreign control, and Russian Poland formed its western defense line with Warsaw as center while German influence rose.
