Porters Lose Redcap Status At Grand Central
New York dispatch reports Grand Central terminal trims redcap staff from 165 to 96 under a work or fight directive. Draft age porters shifted to baggage rooms with higher pay and tougher duties while a smaller unit remains to assist invalids and guard against accidents. Lieutenant Elbert W. Shirk is commended for saving a Belgian soldier from drowning on the Lorraine last June 23.
