Burial forms of early Wisconsin unearthed near Lynxville

Lynxville Wisconsin reports on a Milwaukee museum expedition led by assistant curator McKern. Anthropologists opened six mounds along a hillside near the Winneshiek slough, uncovering hundreds of skeletons with varied burial practices. A principal mound yielded about 35 skeletons and artifacts including shell fragments and broken pottery. The excavation, conducted with careful, tool aided digging, suggests graves over 200 years old predating white contact while indicating long term village sites near the river. Further mounds await exploration along the bluff if schedules permit.
